For a long time, I’ve struggled with ethics as an artist. Some of the most revered art institutions are controlled by boards with people whose lives are characterized by a lack of empathy and an abundance of power. Those who profit off of suffering (the Sackler family/Purdue pharma for example), save face by going into the arts.

How ironic is it that in the age of #metoo, a rapist (Steve Wynn) sits as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kennedy Center, after heading Printed Matter and The New Museum? The powers that oppress cannot be defeated by blind surges forward.

Self-inquiry is essential in any artist, scientist, professor, — any person’s practice.
The professional is always political; where do you fit in there?
