A moon, a rabbit, and falling leaves... what do these all have in common?

They all relate to the Mid-Autumn Festival, a harvest festival celebrated on the solstice by many countries in East Asia. When I was contacted by JADED Pittsburgh and OCA Pittsburgh to make a design for their Asian-american Moon Fest, I was absolutely elated!

Looking into the history of the festival, I incorporated imagery of a rabbit and mortar+pestle in the moon (referring to the legend of the Jade Rabbit) as well as paper lanterns and xiangyun, or auspicious clouds.

JADED Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh’s first Asian American & Pacific Island (AAPI) artist collective. Led by women and non-binary artists, JADED creates spaces for AAPI representation and empowerment.

In May 2024, I had the honor of being invited to design graphics for the collective’s summer to fall season of programming. Inspired by brocade boxes, the fiery and auspicious symbolism of red, and interconnection, I designed the series of graphics above.
