Darya Kharabi (b. 1998, Reston, VA) is a multimedia artist, educator and organizer whose work explores interconnectedness, power, spectacle, and land. Being second-gen Iranian and a community organizer, their eye is always toward those whose existence is most precarious, whether poor, melanated, queer, and/or immigrant; an avid outdoorsperson, they are consumed with the drive toward collectivity with land and life. Darya received their BFA in Social and Political History at Carnegie Mellon. Darya is also a co-founder of Against Carceral Tech, a cooperative of community members and students advocating for technology to be used for collective flourishing. They are currently a Distillery resident at Brew House Arts in Pittsburgh, PA. In their free time, you can find Darya outside hiking, climbing, biking, or foraging, or inside reading, cooking, or hanging out with their cat Sasha. They believe deeply in narratives where the prey unite and overthrow their oppressor, and in small, delicate things having a lot of power. Through cut paper, Darya experiments with ornament and composition to communicate experiences, investigate things that live in the periphery, and agitate for collectivity. Using sculpture and performance, Darya explores diasporic culture and emotion, imagines other worlds, and confronts constructed barriers of borders and time. Walking is a central part of their practice, especially in nature.As a diasporic Iranian, Darya constantly considers their access to America’s land while being barred from their own through borders, sanctions, and totalitarian threats. Relegated to secondhand meeting places to be with their family, they wonder what home is when their loved ones are barred again and again from the land they were raised in, by coincidence of birth and passport. design Project managementProject Goals: Create a highly professional logo and visual identity inspired by caves &amp; science.Create a guide for brand usage that a non-designer can use.Integrate branding into collateral — namely a website (in progress) Hypogenica is a fast-growing biotech startup that hits two industries: carbon capture and industrial chemical manufacturing. Using the startup’s combined expertise on materials science, biochemistry, and cave bacteria, Hypogenica has patented a technology that captures CO2 and feeds it to cave bacteria to produce calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Why is this significant? CaCO3 is an extremely important chemical used in manufacturing paint, plastics, paper and more. Meanwhile, its production currently accounts for around 7% of greenhouse gases produced annually worldwide. The process involves massive limestone mining operations, huge coal expenditures to burn the limestone, then more energy usage to ship the finished product around the world — notably the United States. Hypogenica plays a significant role in changing this market. Not only does it entirely cut out the process of mining and burning limestone, but it actually captures CO2 from the atmosphere in an efficient, continuous process.
